The basic symptoms of early stage mesothelioma are chest pain, coughing, and fatigue. Although caused by asbestos, symptoms of this cancer might not appear until up to fifty years after exposure to the irritant. In general, mesothelioma does not appear until at least twenty years following initial exposure. Due to the reality that the early symptoms are mild and can be caused by several additional diseases, combined with the late appearance as soon as exposure, mesothelioma habitually goes undiagnosed until symptoms worsen and the cancer becomes more serious. Later symptoms can include anemia, unexplained weight loss, difficulty swallowing, diarrhea or constipation, chest pain, bowel obstruction, and night sweats. The prognosis is much better when the disease is caught in initial stages. As such, someone that has been exposed to asbestos should see a doctor immediately if they experience persistent chest pain, coughing, or fatigue
